The largest Bulgarian international airport hosted 418 846 passengers, which was 11 % more than the same month one year earlier. Traditionally, August is the busiest month for the airport. But this year the passenger flow at both terminals reached its highest levels.
Over 14 300 passengers travelled to the five new destinations opened at the end of July – to Geneva, Naples, Cologne, Munich (Memmingen), Bari. The passenger throughput at Terminal 1 increased by 25 % in total in August reaching 152 thousand serviced passengers, and Terminal 2 saw 263 thousand passengers (+2,2%).
Also an increase was achieved with respect to international services (+9,6%) and domestic scheduled services (+4,8%).
The number of transit passengers at Sofia Airport was 372, and tourist charter flights achieved a 38% increase.
Handled aircraft were 4 233 in total – 9 % more than August 2014. Out of them, 77 % operated flights on international routes and 7 % - on domestic routes.
Summer is the season of the so called “small aviation” – light aircraft used for business and private flights. A 23 % increase was reported for that sector in comparison to the previous year as well.
A considerable increase was achieved in total cargo tonnage as well. It reached 16 % on comparable annual basis. Processed cargo and mail were 1 434 tonnes, with transit 8,5 tonnes. This increase was due to the larger volumes transported on all-cargo aircraft (+30%) while on scheduled passenger flights a slight decrease was reported.
