SWISS launches again direct flights between Sofia and Zurich

Sofia Airport welcomed with water salute the aircraft of Swiss International Air Lines that landed at 09:29 a.m. from Zurich.

The official ceremony celebrating the return of the Swiss air carrier to Bulgaria was attended by Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski, the Ambassadors of the two countries – Their Excellencies Denis Knobel and Meglena Plugchieva, Sofia Airport’s Executive Director Hristo Shterionov, Head of SWISS Austria and Central Eastern Europe Bernhard Wodl, and journalists.

In his welcome speech, Hristo Shterionov expressed the satisfaction of the entire airport personnel with the introduction of Sofia, after a three-year interruption, to the network of the Swiss airline as one of the twenty-two new European destinations, to which year-round flights will be operated. “Sofia is gaining in popularity again as a tourist and business destination and the return of Swiss is a vivid demonstration of that fact. For us this means trust and an opportunity for establishing long-term partnership” – Mr. Shterionov said.

Head of Swiss Austria and Central Eastern Europe Bernhard Wodl highlighted that due to the excellent collaboration with the airport authorities and personnel, SWISS managed to introduce Sofia as a new destination to its network. “As part of the Lufthansa Group and a member of Star Alliance, SWISS remains faithful to its mission of providing quality air services that link Switzerland with Europe and the world” – Mr. Wodl noted.

Minister Moskovski welcomed back the Swiss airline and said that 30 000 passengers were expected to take advantage of the destination within a year. “I would like to assure the management team of SWISS that choosing Sofia Airport as a partner, they have chosen a successfully developing airport” – the Minister said.

Both sides showed interest in strengthening their relationship in future.

Sofia – Zurich route is operated with Avro RJ 100 and Fokker 100 aircraft. The flights are operated four times a week from Terminal 2 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Arrival and departure times are different on different days of the week to the convenience of passengers travelling on business or looking for connecting flights to other destinations through Zurich airport.

The airline offers three types of tickets – First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. Tickets can be booked online as well. The price of round trip Sofia – Zurich is EUR 124, Economy Class.

Swiss International Air Lines is the twenty-first air carrier operating scheduled passenger flights from and to Sofia Airport all year round.
